Ministries

Food Pantry
The food pantry is open two days per week. As a member of the Twelve Baskets Food Bank, we are part of an effort to decrease hunger on the coast. To date, we have served 3,000 families. Many return each month for assistance due to disability, unemployment, or limited income to meet life’s basic needs. Eligibility is determined according to income and household size.

Free Clinic
The Free Clinic provides quality medical care to the uninsured on the Gulf Coast. It is the only one in existence in Gulfport. As one of three clinics on the coast, patients from across the Gulf Coast utilize these services. Services are provided each Wednesday afternoon and third Thursday morning of the month. We are a member of the National Association of Free Clinics. www.freeclinics.us  The Clinic was also deemed a Free Clinic under the Federal Tort Claims Act, which provides protection for volunteer physicians. (For more information, see link to Free Clinic on site)

Mental Health Counseling
Mental health appointments are currently available for patients in the Free Clinic.

Emergency Assistance to the Homeless
There has been an increase in the homeless population on the coast since Hurricane Katrina. With no remaining shelters, the homeless are impacted by exposure to the elements. We offer emergency food bags, first aid, blankets, bus passes, toiletry items, socks, caps, and sleeping bags. They can also receive free medical care and counseling through our ministries. Gulf Coast Community Ministries is a member of the Open Doors Homeless Coalition.

HPRP Program (Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Rehousing Program)
Assistance with rent and utilities is available to individuals and families who are homeless or who are at imminent risk of being homeless.  Appointments must be scheduled with the HPRP Case Manager.

Clothes Closet
The clothes closet will be open each Tuesday morning from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., beginning March 1, 2010.  Donations of gently used items are appreciated.

Literacy Ministry
Beginning in the fall of 2010, literacy programs will be offered that will give individuals the opportunity to learn important life skills.  These will include adult reading, ESL (English as a Second Language), and financial literacy classes.
